Selecting Songs
With so many things to be accountable for, your head may be spinning as you embark on an event planning journey. Even if you have a great planner by your side! Here are some tips for our engaged couples that will help with selecting the songs you want.
Light some candles and have a romantic one-on-one with your fiancé/e. No wedding logistics talk! Just reminisce about your love. Think about how you felt when you first met each other, any songs that make you think of them, what your first kiss was like, etc. Talk it out and see if any songs come to mind!
Start this list early, but put no pressure on yourself to have it completed (unless the wedding is under 60 days away or you happened to book late). Take notes as you go on which songs would be great for which moments!
Assign feelings to different parts of the day. You probably have already done this as you dream about the overall “vibe”! Here are some common examples:
Getting Ready: your own Spotify playlist of get-hype songs, maybe some sentimental stuff to help you cry it out a little before your makeup is done
Ceremony: sweet, romantic, sentimental, reverent, picking up the pace at the end with a happy exit song
Cocktail Hour: flirty, laid-back, fun
Reception: progressively high energy with room for sentiment during speeches, first dance, other special moments
Afterparty: anything goes!
What stood out to you about the last wedding or party you attended? Anything attractive or unattractive to you about the music? Sometimes inspo comes from thinking back and realizing what you like or don’t like in general. For example, I love to dance but I need breaks from the fun songs and I remember that my high school prom didn’t have enough slow songs. I also remember one wedding I went to that had the loudest music ever and it gave me a headache. If you have a venue booked, consider why you chose it. What you like about the event space(s) is vital to the overall experience.
